Causes for Lower Left Abdominal Pain in Women

Many women suffer pain on the left side of the abdomen. Just under the waist line on the left, the pain could occur due to many reasons. It could be due to infection in the fallopian tubes on the left, menstrual pain, constipation, diverticulitis, disease of ovaries on the left, irritable bowel syndrome, ectopic pregnancy on the left side, ulcerative colitis, kidney stone on the left side and Crohn’s disease.

Pain on the left side of the abdomen in women could be experienced if some of the organs or structures get affected by a disease. If the pain is experienced regularly it is unwise to ignore it. Consult a doctor without loss of time as these could turn chronic over a period of time.

What could be the Organs Affected?

On the left side of the abdomen located are various organs including the skin and muscles that cover the wall of the abdomen on its left side, cervix, the left kidney’s lower end, nerves and bigger blood vessel including the aorta branches and its parts, left ureter, the left ovary and the fallopian tube, the large bowel’s descending part, a part of the urinary bladder and the sigmoid colon.

Fibroids are another common reason for pain in the left abdomen in women. The general practitioner conducts an ultrasound for diagnosis and depending upon the fibroid size, treatment is administered. A process called uterine embolectomy is adopted where supply of blood to the fibroids is blocked for a period which makes them reduce in size. The other treatments include myomectomy which is fibroid removal and also microwave ablation.

Could there be some other Causes?

As compared to males, women have uterus, vaginal region, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes etc. which when get affected by disease or infection could lead to abdominal pain in women.  On the left abdominal side are located the rectum and the larger intestine too which could lead to conditions like diverticulitis and constipation. Female pelvic pain or pelvic pain is the other term also used for pain in the lower side of the abdomen.

Some of the other causes for left abdominal pain in women are abdominal aortic aneurysm, which is a rupture in the aorta blood vessel, cancer of the bowels, obstruction in the bowels, ectopic pregnancy. Endometriosis an unnatural spread of the lining of the uterus, henoch-schonlein purpura, hernia, stone in the kidney, pyelonephritis or infection in kidneys or cyst in the ovaries all can lead to pain in the abdomen.

Measures taken to Resolve the Health Issue

What are the treatment measures for pain in the left abdomen in women?  It does not matter if the pain is mild or severe. For this the family doctor or a general physician is best to approach. Antacids will have to be taken for temporary relief if you are suffering from ulcers and heartburn. Such a health issue can be avoided if less salty and less spicy food is consumed and instead a nutritious and healthy diet is consumed. Lots of water will also have to be taken daily so that kidney stones do not get formed. If there is evidence of infection, a course of an anti-biotic could also be prescribed.

Pain caused in the left side the abdomen could be due to menstruation. If pain persists for a few days, an anti-inflammatory and non-steroidal medicine like paracetamol or panadol which are pain killers can also be taken. It is best to take this medication one or two days before the menstruation starts. The family doctor may advise contraceptive pills to be taken orally in case the pain killers are not effective enough.

Antibiotic Treatment Depending Upon Infection

There could be other pain on the left side of the abdomen due to PID or the Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. A swab of the vaginal area or a blood test is done by the doctor or maybe an ultrasound scanning too. Depending upon how severe the kind of infection is antibiotics in different doses could be administered by the doctor. A Ceftriaxone tablet or injection may also be given by the doctor depending upon the abdominal pain.

In the case of ectopic pregnancy, urine and blood are examined and ultrasound conducted. If there is a rupture then an operation is conducted on an emergency basis. If the ectopic pregnancy is of the non-bleeding type then to dissolve it, medications are administered. At times, the prescribed treatment measures are strictly followed but still the left abdominal pain continues to persist.
