There is probably no experience that can truly compare to the feeling of bringing a child into this world. Some say that the rewards are worth the time and the downsides that come along with a pregnancy. Still having a child is not a matter that should be taken lightly. There are quite a few aspects that should be taken into consideration about having a baby and the most likely to ignore them. Person should also realize the severity of impact on infant due to ignorance in his later age.
Adults are usually more aware of the necessities and sacrifices that come along with a child. They can also figure out what it takes to raise a kid. However, teenagers rarely think of the consequences of their own actions, so they do not realize just how crucial it is to avoid pregnancy at such an early age. Adults have an idea of what having a child means and they still manage to be surprised at how things get tougher than they first seemed. However, teenagers have to face pregnancy and raise a child, knowing that they do not understand half the things adults do.
Why avoid pregnancy:
If anyone ever thought that being pregnant and raising a child was easy, then they have never experienced either of them. There are quite a few reasons why you should think things through before bringing an infant into the world like:
1. Time – A baby is not conceived today, and then born tomorrow. It takes time, a lot of bad mornings, filled with morning sickness, months of swollen ankles and weird cravings, just to mention a few of the experiences that you will have to face. The mother is confined to her bed for the entire length of her pregnancy in some particular cases. After the baby is born, you will need to have the time to raise it since you cannot just go about your life like he or she never came into the world. Everything about having and raising a child require time.
2. Finances – Although it may sound cold, your child will be an investment. You will need to spend a lot of money into the healthy upbringing of a kid, including food, clothes, doctor bills, school fees and the list can grow a lot longer than you ever expected. So if, you are not ready to support yourself and a baby financially, think twice before you have one.
3. Age – Some say that younger parents have greater chances of bonding with their children, but having a baby while still a teenager is not the best idea. Besides the financial obstacle, there is also the problem of being ready, both from physical as well as psychological point of view. Teenage mothers have greater chances of having complications during pregnancy and childbirth because their body is not yet fully developed to accommodate a child. Moreover, since a teenage girl is still growing, her as well as her child’s nutrition will suffer causing health problems to one or both.
When to avoid pregnancy:
If you don’t feel that you are ready to have a child, then it is best to avoid it. Regardless of how much pressure you feel from the outside (seeing others with their children may be a stressor), don’t do it unless you are entirely sure you can face whatever life may deal your way. Teenagers are not the only ones that can have children without being ready for one, but they are the most likely to do this out of ignorance. There are two main conditions that need to be met when considering of having a child:
Readiness – Being ready for a child means that you have the adequate physical growth, mental strength and financial means to support him or her from the moment they are conceived to the moment they grow up. If you lack either of the three, then you may want to reconsider bringing a new life into this world.
Health – This is a critical factor while considering a baby. Some health problems may lead to a risky or complications during pregnancy. Here are some conditions in which pregnancy can be risky:
- Complicated valvular heart disease
- Ischemic heart disease
- Certain liver diseases
- Systemic lupus
Methods to avoid pregnancy:
There are more than enough methods out there that can help you to avoid pregnancies, unfortunately, teenagers have a tendency of not using them, which is why in America, for example, there are approximately 500 thousand babies born in a year from teenage mothers. Here are a few methods of avoiding pregnancy:
Birth control shot:
The birth control shot is mainly composed of a hormone that is produced by the ovaries. Its name is progesterone and when it is applied it will be effective for a period of 3 months, after which you have to take another shot that will prevent pregnancy. As the name says this birth control is found in the form of an injection that can be applied on the arm or the buttocks. As far as the effectiveness goes, when it comes to the birth control shot it has a success rate of 97%, but there are a few mentions that come with these results. As you may be aware some health issues may interfere with how well the shot works. Also remember to consult a doctor before administering, especially if you are taking any other medication, since it may interfere with the shot or even cause adverse reactions. When it comes to side effects, girls that choose this birth control method may experience changes to their period, be it irregular or none at all. Also weight gain, depression and some breast tenderness are the possible side effects as well as headaches.
Birth control pill:
Birth control pills, just like the shot, contain hormones in order to change the body of the woman so that the ovaries don’t produce eggs. Unlike the shot, however, it is usually filled with a mixture of estrogen and progesterone. This birth control method comes in packs of 21 or 28 pills and it is required for the woman to take one each day at the same hours. The difference between the 21 and 28 pack is that the 28 pack contains 7 pills that do not have hormones in the. Although it may seem pointless to buy a 28 pack, the utility of those 7 non-hormone pills is that it keeps the habit of taking a pill each day into the system. The most significant recommendation for those that use this method of birth control is to use an additional measure of contraception for the first 7 days after starting to take the pill. There are 2 additional forms of this pill:
- Pills containing only one type of hormone – progesterone- that are smaller in size
- Pills that are taken over a period of 12 weeks without interruption and only then have a break of 7 days allowing the woman that is taking them to have her period. Remember that this pill should be taken regardless if the person in question is planning on being sexually active during this time or not. For greatest effectiveness, it should be taken at the same time of the day on a daily basis
Birth control patch:
Patches use the same combination of hormones as the pills do, the difference being in the delivery method. A patch releases the hormones that it contains through the skin and they are delivered into the blood stream. The hormones on the patch prevent the release of and egg, thickens the mucus in the cervix area to prevent the sperm from entering and sometimes it may even affect the uterus lining in such a way that a possible fertilized egg have a hard time attaching to the uterus walls. The patch is applied (the first time) either on the first day or the first Sunday after the woman’s period started. The effect of the patch lasts for a week, so it should be changed weekly, for 3 weeks in a row, then pause for a week in order for the woman using the patch to have her period.
The diaphragm is a birth control method, which prevents sperm from entering into the uterus area. It is inserted into the vagina at a high level and it should always be accompanied by spermicide. The diaphragm can be inserted up to 6 hours before the sexual encounter, and should be left inside for at least 6 hours after, but never leave it any longer then 24 hours. After using the birth control it should be washed, rinsed and air dried. Keep in mind that you should never use baby powder, oil-based lubricants or baby oil, because it will deteriorate the rubber.
One of the best known methods of birth control is condom. The male condom is usually made out of latex and unlike the female condom it is worn on the penis. The reason why this contraception method is so popular is because it is not used only for birth control, but it can also be an effective way to prevent STDs. The way it is applied is rather simple. The tip of the condom is to be held between two fingers and the rest rolled around the penis, so that when it is properly placed, there are nor air gaps and there is enough space at the tip for the semen. Having quite a high rate of success, it is advisable to keep oil-based lubricants away from it, since it can deteriorate its rubber made of. Also before you take it out of its wrapper check the expiration date and if the condom seems dry or is rather stiff when you take it out of its package, you should use a new one.
Made out of polyurethane the female condom has a flexible ring at both ends, one which will be closed when placed inside the vagina and the other end will remain open at the entrance. Both male and the female condom need to be disposed of appropriately (garbage) and immediately after sex, but the female condom can be inserted up to 8 hours prior to the act. Although not as commonly used as male condoms, it is best to keep in mind never to you both types of condoms at the same time, since they can stick together and make one if not both fall out of place and thus completely inefficient.
Although spermicide are not very widely used but they usually come in 5 different forms:
It is usually used in combination with other contraceptive means like the diaphragm and condoms, but used alone it has a 71% chances of success. For the best results the spermicide needs to be applied as close to the cervix as possible and no matter what brand is used, it is only effective for 1 hours after it was applied, so if more then that has passed, you need to reapply the birth control method.
What is essential to know about these methods of birth control is that the first 3 don’t protect you from STDs. If you are concerned about them, condoms may be the best choice for you. Also, you may want to keep in mind that while most of these methods have a high efficiency, they do not have a 100% rate of success. The best and most effective contraceptive method of them all will always be abstinence.
Pregnancy is a serious matter that should never be taken lightly, even more so if you think about how once a baby comes into play, your life will change permanently. No matter how you look at the facts, a child is not a present that you can return when you don’t want it, which is why it is so vital that you use the birth control methods correctly and thus avoid having to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.
